The New Face of BLACK FACE

Mainstream media has always found ways to portray African-Americans in a negative light a lot of times spinning it as just innocent TV with no harm done or intended.   Remember these spirited individuals….

Green haired clown *clears throat* I mean the person explaining the police chase he witnessed while on his way to buy “a piece of burger from Burger King” #sigh

Antoine Dodson – “hide yo kids, hide yo wife and hide yo husband cause they raping errbody!” Not to be upstaged by his green haired counterpart or anyone else, Antoine gave us an animated and flamboyant narrative of a home invasion at his sister’s apartment…. #anothersigh

Finally, how could we ever forget Sweet Brown? “Oh Lord Jesus its fire” stated Ms. Brown as she shared her enthusiastic description of what she was doing the moment she realized her apartment had caught on fire. “I got bronchitis Jesus, ain’t nobody got time for det!”  She went on to explain.  No Ms. Brown, no one has time for you!  #1moresigh

I thought Sweet Brown would never stop trending.  Thank God she did!

Let’s take a quick stroll down memory lane back to the ugly era of blackface entertainment….

“Blackface is a form of theatrical makeup used by performers to represent a black person. The practice gained popularity during the 19th century and contributed to the proliferation of stereotypes such as the “happy-go-lucky darky on the plantation” or the “dandified coon”.  https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackface

Now let’s mosey on back to the current day.   I don’t know if  I didn’t pay attention growing up or if local news stations were more subliminal with this kind of mockery; whatever the case may be it appears that today many news outlets are more than willing to bluntly delight us with “spirited” characters such as those above.  Not surprising they mostly dwell in  minority communities.  Every time I see a new video surface on social media and television I cringe while thinking oh God not another one.  I feel embarrassed, angry and at times defeated!   All of these feelings recently resurfaced when I began seeing videos of the latest “social media sensation” appear in my news feed over & over again.  I dreaded pushing the play button on Facebook but…. I did. Meet Michelle Dobyne the latest sensation social media is buzzing about.

Mrs. Dobyne gave us a colorful recollection of a conversation she had with her neighbor while finding out her apartment complex was on fire (something like that). Yep… uncombed hair and all! #bigsigh.  Have a glimpse below and enjoy if you can, ugh!

“You never know who you will run into covering the news of the day. News On 6 photojournalist Ethan Pierce met a lady named Michelle Dobyne this morning. Her description of a fire at the Casa Linda Apartments…is incredible.”

Just like everyone else I enjoy reading the comment section of various videos posted so… I did just that.  Most people encouraged this foolishness while some condemned it.  Below are just a few of the comments along with my thoughts/reactions to each comment highlighted in bold.

” she is great” posted one FB user.  um… NO she is not!

“She should host the news every night.  I might actually watch.” REALLY?!

“Hope we don’t get a neighbor like this lol”  – Response “Hahahahha  ikr omg I would die” #SMH

“This woman is so funny! We want her to come to France, we need more like her!” Folks the WORLD is watching!

“Seems like anyone will act like a moron to get their 15 minutes. Now they will be remembered as a moron.”  Agreed!

“I said what! She said yea, I said naw! NOT TA DAYYY, lol they had to cut the interview short, the reporter couldn’t stop laughing.”  They know what they’re doing!

“As soon as she said “breffus” I knew I didn’t need to watch the rest…”  I feel your pain!

“They always pick the most entertaining people to interview. Ooooweeee!“  No words… just sighs

“I’m feeling like this will end up in to one of those little remix thingies… It did!

“bol the news wrong” They literally are WRONG!

“Lmao. She sound like sweet brown but lookin like charles ramsey. Weak.” Just sighs

“Black folks really need to quit getting on TV acting and looking-a-fool!  It is making us look bad!” I couldn’t agree more.

“Hahahhahahahahhah I can’t” Me either!

I will say I was delighted to see that I am not the only one who is sick and tired of seeing media outlets blatantly make a mockery of African-Americans.

In the second video below an anchor from News On 6 informs Mrs. Dobyne that she has become famous due to her earlier debut ….  Now sir! Please don’t encourage this!  Her husband even chimed in to boast about the video being viewed 11 million times…. As if that’s a good thing! By the time this video aired I believe News On 6 saw fit for just a little damage control.  Check it out for yourselves… Click below.

“Here’s an update on Michelle Dobyne, the woman who millions of people have seen describe her experience in an apartment fire Sunday morning.

Michelle told our Rick Wells that she’s sleeping in her car to keep an eye on her apartment while it’s boarded up. As you can see from the video below, she hasn’t lost her positive outlook on life despite a tough situation. If you’d like to help, Annie Chang News on 6 talked with Michelle and collected the following information:”

By the third and final video 6 Oklahoma’s Own saw fit for a lil more damage control.  Donations can be made blah, blah, blah… Yeah right!  It’s called #CYA!  Watch below.

While mainstream media is doing an excellent job of painting a negative picture of us it is astonishing to see our own media outlets use their platforms on social media to take part in the same mockery.  I will not waste my time calling anyone out… YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE! I guess TV & radio ratings and likes & shares on FB & IG are more important than how the world is viewing us collectively huh! #BigOleSigh

We have got to stop degrading ourselves on TV and social media… This includes going to the Maury Povich show testing 20 men only to find out neither is “your baby daddy”; video postings of men and women fighting, women fighting each other or twerking, half-naked; not to mention videos posted of the babies singing derogatory rap lyrics and twerking YES I have even seen videos of the babies twerking to adult music… This list could go on but I’m growing weary as I recall the countless ways WE use technology to destroy our OWN image.

Many people posting comments under the Dobyne video were from around the globe.  With a total of 257,453 likes, 26m views 127K comments and 612,543 shares(these numbers have gone up I’m sure) we should be very concerned because as I stated above THE WORLD IS WATCHING! We are a detriment to ourselves, communities and future generations.

We are becoming the laughing-stock of the world.  Unfortunately, too many of us are willing to grace the world with a few minutes of pure buffoonery for nothing more than a few weeks of attention on social media.  Welcome to the new era and FACE of BLACK FACE folks!

Don’t mind me! I’m just a gal #BloggingForChange
