Father’s Day – A Stolen Tradition
- This week started off with what I believe to be the most underrated and under celebrated holiday and that is FATHER’S DAY! Traditionally on father’s day we celebrate FATHERS, right?! Insert sigh!!! Staying true to the persnickety creatures we are as Father’s day approached there was a big debate trending on social media and some radio stations. We all know that this day is meant to recognize and celebrate outstanding, courageous, proud, & upstanding (the list could go on) fathers (single or not) who live the true essence of fatherhood. Long sigh…… Well, it appears that some women are not happy with Mother’s day alone and want recognition on Father’s day too! I first noticed this “trend” last year but I didn’t think much of it. My current mood about it at that time was WELL….
So this year the closer we approached father’s day the more heated the debates on social media and radio became. My first reaction was its Father’s day #SitDown – Moving on! Eventually I started noticing a meme in my FB feed. I call it a Father’s Plea & it read the following:
Posted on FB by
FATHERS DAY
NOT
SINGLE MOTHERS DAY
WE DON’T TAKE AWAY FROM MOTHER’S DAY BY GIVING ALL SINGLE FATHERS CREDIT FOR DOING IT ON HIS OWN. WE DON’T USE THIS DAY TO CALL OUT OUR DEAD BEAT BABY MAMAS.
WE LET THE REAL MOTHERS HAVE WHAT WAS MEANT TO BE THEIR DAY.
WITH RESPECT, PLEASE DO THE SAME FOR US.
Sincerely,
-Fathers everywhere
Now I will admit I was reluctant to share or even like this meme because I am aware that some of my friends on FB are single mothers and I did not want to appear cold hearted towards their feelings. Please hear me when I say I have nothing but respect and admiration for all single parents. It’s a tough job and I am not so sure I could be that strong. With that being said I do take issue with some folks pushing this “happy father’s day mom” agenda! It isn’t right! That’s just my opinion of course. This debate struck a nerve with me when I started noticing memes/postings similar to the below images on my FB & IG pages.
I thought to myself now wait just one cotton-picking minute. Before I even thought much about it I decided to share the Father’s Plea meme and posted the caption – #Agree, #It’sDaddy’sDay, #SitDown – You chose the dead beat!
After posting the “A Fathers Plea” to my FB page I hid it from my timeline a few times but I put it back up again. I continued to battle with the perception of being cold towards single mothers and that is certainly not my intent. My dismay is more so with females who not only use this day to bash the father of their children, refer to them as low-life, deadbeat, scum etc. but have the audacity to say “this day belongs to me!” I say to you look deep within yourself because you chose to have those babies with that scum, deadbeat or low-life. Your circumstances are due to the choices you have made and you do not have the right to expect outstanding fathers to just sacrifice THEIR day because of your choices and your Bitter Betty complex. Please see below and have a seat!
#WorkOnYou
To single parents male or female everywhere guess what? Single Parents Day is celebrated on March 21 of each year turns out YOU ALL GET TWO DAYS any-who! Yeap! Ole Ronny Reagan gave you that day! Bitter Betty you get two days after all too!….. but Father’s day is just not one of them!
Proclamation 5166 — National Single Parent Day, 1984
March 21, 1984
Now, Therefore, I, Ronald Reagan, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim March 21, 1984, as National Single Parent Day. I call on the people of the United States to recognize the contributions single parents are making, sometimes under great hardships, to the lives of their children, and I ask that they volunteer their help, privately or through community organizations, to single parents who seek it to meet their aspirations for their children.
In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-first day of March, in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and eighty-four, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and eighth.
Ronald Reagan
